Things To Do in
Vilcabamba, Ecuador

Whether you came for the mountains, the energy, or just to see what this little valley is all about, Vilcabamba has a way of drawing you in and slowing you down.
This isn't a place you rush through. It's a place you feel. From sunrise hikes and sacred ceremonies to sunset dancing and casual community nights, there's always something happening if you know where to look.
Here's your inside guide to the magic. Local spots, weekly gatherings, and soulful happenings that make this town more than just a stop on the map.

Come explore. Come connect.
Vilcabamba is waiting for you.

Small town, big soul.
What to do while you're here.

  • Mandango Mountain
Start your stay with a hike to Mandango, the legendary "Sleeping Inca" that towers above Vilcabamba. The views from the top stretch endlessly across the valley, and the sense of accomplishment is just as vast. Go early, bring water, and let the climb remind you what your body is capable of.
Pro tip: Just hike to the nose and back. Don't try to hike the ridge down the backside unless you have a guide or already know the way - you will get lost. I got lost, and lucky.

  • Vilcabamba Hiking Club
If you're here on a Tuesday, join the Vilcabamba Hiking Club at 9AM at Coconut Cafe, just across from the bus station in town. Most hikes are a bit intense, so no children under 10. Except on the first Tuesday of each month, which is a flat, family friendly walk. Don't let age discourage you either, our oldest hiker is 73 years young! The group is led by the incredible Sue, and its one of the best ways to meet locals, see hidden trails, and breathe deep in the Andes.

  • Rumi Wilco Nature Reserve
For a quieter dose of nature, explore the peaceful trails at Rumi Wilco Nature Reserve. Wander under tree canopies, spot exotic birds, and finish with a dip in the sacred river that winds through the reserve. All trails are clearly labeled for beginner friendly hiking.

  • Yamburara Alto Cascadas
Two waterfall hikes are also worth the effort: El Palto, a favorite for both locals and visitors, and Cascada Escondida - more off the beaten path, but just as breathtaking.

  • Book a Hiking Photo Session
If you're looking to not just see the landscape but also be seen in it, then book a "Wild & Free" photography session with me! It's more than a photoshoot, it's an adventure woven with intention. You choose: hike to the mountains or a waterfall, and we'll co-create a session that captures your spirit in motion. Perfect for solo travelers, couples, or anyone craving an experience that's both grounding and wildly expressive.
If you are interested in a photo session but not a full hike to go with it, be sure to check out my other offerings here.

  • Horseback Riding Adventures
Saddle up for a horseback riding adventure through the surrounding mountains. Local guides offer everything from short scenic rides to full-day treks with mountain views you won't forget.

  • Temezcal Ceremony
Step into the ancient tradition of the Temezcal, a sacred sweat lodge ceremony rooted in indigenous healing. Guided by an experienced facilitator, Bernie, this powerful ritual uses steam, song, prayer, and intention to cleanse the body, quiet the mind, and reconnect with spirit. Held in a dome-shaped hut, the experience is both intense and deeply transformative.
Pro tip: Hydrate well beforehand, and come with an open heart and a change of clothes.

  • El Carro Azul & Buddha Fusion
These two are the town's favorite spots for live music and nightlife. Events change regularly, so be sure to follow the Vilcabamba Community Facebook Page to stay in the loop. Whether it's a solo guitarist under the stars or a rock cover band that gets everyone dancing, these nights are full of heart.

  • Chambalabamba Ecstatic Dance

  • Magic Nights at Matico
Feeling social but more low-key? Magic the Gathering nights at the Matico Shop happen every Tuesday and Thursday at 5PM. Even if you're new, you're welcome. Print your own custom deck for $3, and your first visit includes a free cookie and beer. It's quirky, fun, and surprisingly a great way to make friends.

  • VilcaHockey
